The chief minister of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, said today: At least four people have died as a result of cyclone (Mandus), which was accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds.
Reuters quoted Stalin as saying in an interview with reporters: Cyclone Mandos, which made landfall late last night, damaged about 185 houses and huts, and uprooted 400 trees in Chennai, the state capital, and caused severe material damage, and power outages in a number of areas.
He added that nearly 25,000 people, including disaster relief personnel, participated in the rescue work, and more than 9,000 people were transferred to 201 safe relief camps.
In turn, the Indian Meteorological Authority said on Twitter today: The cyclone is expected to gradually weaken in the coming hours.
