The incoming Chairman of the Finance Committee wants the interest rate increase not to apply to those eligible for a mortgage according to the parameters of the Ministry of Housing • It is not clear what the legal feasibility of such a proposal that actually interferes with the banks' mortgage pricing

Despite the criticism:

the bill to freeze interest rates on mortgages by the incoming chairman of the finance committee, MK Gafni, is heartbreaking.

Gafni revealed this evening (Saturday) in the 'Meet the Press' studio: "On Monday, I will put on the Knesset table the bill to freeze interest on mortgages for first-time home buyers, I assume that the majority of committee members will support this important bill."

"I passed a law that the monetary committee of the Bank of Israel sets the interest rate, and the politicians cannot interfere and I am not going back. But the state cannot stand by when there is a price for its life," explained Gafni.

"The meaning of the proposal is that the interest rate increase will not apply to those who are entitled to a mortgage according to the parameters of the Ministry of Housing, and if there is no legal possibility to do so, the state will regulate the price increase (mortgage increase - SG)".

We note that it is not clear what the legal feasibility of such a bill would actually interfere with the mortgage pricing done by the banks.

Therefore, Gafni already emphasizes that if this is not possible, the state will subsidize the increase in mortgage prices for the weakest strata only.

In addition, next week the finance committee will meet on the subject of the cost of living in the Amir.

Representatives of the largest companies in the economy, the marketing chains, the electric company, the water company and the various government ministries will be invited to the discussion.

The current proposal is being submitted against the backdrop of much concern over housing prices this week following the statement of the chairman of Torah Judaism, the designated Minister of Housing, MK Yitzhak Goldknopf, who said "I did not know about the housing crisis until today".

"They are talking to me about a crisis. I didn't know the Ministry of Housing before so I don't know that there is a crisis in this industry. I see that we are building in Israel. We will double, quarter, five. We will reach everything," he continued.

"I hear from everyone that the plans are ready and should go into construction. I have people in the Ministry of Housing who are already there, there is another gallery of consultants, professionals. I think we will be able to bring the people in a few years a row for everyone."

Gafni was quick to disavow the statement and the next day he said about it: "I understood from his assistants that he was speaking with humor. I am seriously saying that the housing crisis is a crisis that exists in Israeli society."
