According to the Trésor de la langue française, a portmanteau word is a
"verbal creation formed by the telescoping of two (or three) words existing in the language"
.
Some are associated with a hyphen like
"coat hanger"
when others are completely merged with the beginning of the first word and the end of the second.
And this, unlike neologisms, which are new words that have recently appeared in a language.
