An earthquake of magnitude 6 shakes Mexico, and the alarm is triggered in the Federal District

The epicenter was south of Tecpan de Galeana, Guerrero. But it was felt in Mexico City, where hundreds of thousands of citizens took to the streets in search of shelter. 


A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico on Sunday morning, raising alarm in Mexico City and driving people from the capital to the streets.

The earthquake occurred at 8:31 in the morning, local time, with an epicenter 17 kilometers south of Tecpan de Galeana, in the state of Guerrero, southern Mexico, according to records from the National Seismological Service (SSN) of Mexico.

The United States Geological Survey said the epicenter was located 4 kilometers (2½ miles) northwest of Corral Falso.

The area is located along the Pacific coast of Mexico, between the resorts of Acapulco and Zihuatenejo.

After the earthquake, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed the magnitude and the epicenter on the coast of the state of Guerrero.

"The Civil Protection plan is being applied. We will inform you soon," he wrote in the message posted on social networks.

In Mexico City, the earthquake caused alarm and hundreds of thousands of citizens left their homes to try to take refuge in safe areas.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum pointed out on social networks that the Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection "has no record of incidents after the earthquake in the city."

In addition, he said that after an overflight the Secretary of Citizen Security of the capital

"no damage is reported."

Meanwhile, the governor of the state of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, said in a message that, according to Civil Protection, in the state "no major damage has been recorded, however constant monitoring is maintained in coordination with municipalities."

This Sunday's earthquake occurred after the earthquakes that shook Mexico almost three months ago, on September 19 and 23, of magnitude 7.7 and 5.6, respectively.

The one on September 19 happened less than an hour after the national drill that is carried out every September 19 to commemorate the earthquakes of 1985 and 2017, which occurred on this same date and are considered the most destructive in recent history.

While the one on the 23rd was one of the thousands of aftershocks on September 19.

In Mexico, in September 2017, 471 people died in three earthquakes -on the 7th, 19th and 23rd-, in the biggest natural tragedy since the 1985 earthquake, which left thousands dead in the country's capital.
