Latino vote, decisive in Los Angeles mayoral election 3:58
(CNN) --
Karen Bass will be sworn in as Los Angeles' first female mayor this Sunday, marking another historic achievement in her career.
Kamala Harris - the first woman and the first black woman to become vice president - will be in charge of taking the oath of office at the Los Angeles City Council.
Bass overcame a fierce challenge from real estate mogul Rick Caruso, who spent more than $104 million to defeat her in November.
Bass will succeed Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Elected to the California State Assembly in 2004, Bass made history four years later by becoming the first black woman to serve as speaker of a state legislature.

When Bass takes office, the four largest cities in the United States will have black mayors: Eric Adams in New York, Lori Lightfoot in Chicago and Sylvester Turner in Houston.

The congresswoman, who has served six terms in Congress, has argued that her longstanding relationships with state and national legislators would translate into increased funding for Los Angeles to address the city's housing crisis.
Bass also vowed to use his contacts in the Joe Biden administration to address issues like the need for more federal housing vouchers.
As mayor, she said she would also seek federal waivers to allow for the creation of mental health and substance abuse centers with more beds.
