When should you clean your wood stove?

To avoid clogging, a wood stove, log stove, wood pellet stove, coal stove or pellet stove requires regular maintenance to ensure good performance.

This cleaning must be done daily during the lighting period, as for a closed wood-burning fireplace.

The ideal is to empty the ash pan and clean the glass and the interior and exterior walls of the stove every week.

In this way, you ensure optimal heating and combustion quality.

If you do not yet have a contemporary wood stove, choose an RGE-certified craftsman to install Flame Green certified equipment and thus benefit from the energy bonus.

The chimney sweep will dismantle your stove, clean the hearth and the pipes, sweep the flue and check the smoke collector and the smoke evacuation.

To note

Once a year, you must call in a qualified professional chimney sweep to check your equipment.

The ideal is to call on the installer of the equipment.

How do you maintain a stove yourself?

For optimal washing of your main heating or auxiliary heating, here are the different elements to be cleaned rigorously:

  • Wash the glass, as it darkens quickly from smoke and soot.

In a spray bottle, mix water, white vinegar and coarse salt.

Wet the glass and wipe with newspaper or a sponge.

You can also use a steam cleaner.

  • Empty the ash box (in the composter if you have one) with a metal shovel, sweep the combustion chamber and the fireplace with a brush.

There are handy ash vacuums out there, but your regular vacuum can do the trick to prevent ash buildup.

  • Wash the inside walls of the pans regularly, with newspaper or a cloth and a little cleaning product.

  • Take out and empty the burner (or crucible) and clear the holes in the bottom to ensure optimal combustion.

  • Clean the outer walls of the stove (whether in cast iron or stainless steel) and the ventilation with a damp sponge.

  • Clean and check the condition of the joints of the wood or pellet stove, to remove all residues and ensure that the heating system is properly sealed.

  • By performing this cleaning often, you optimize the durability of your heating appliances.

Tenant or owner: who should pay for the maintenance of a wood stove?

As with a fireplace, the tenant must maintain the wood stove or pellet stove on a daily basis.

This is part of the day-to-day maintenance of the accommodation and its general obligations, as are the costs of minor repairs and sweeping (see decree no. 87-712 of August 26, 1987).

If you have any doubts, check in the lease contract if it is mentioned that the sweeping of the flue is the responsibility of the tenant.

On the other hand, the owner must ensure that the work is carried out properly.

He must also check that the casing, the exhaust pipe and the stove are in good condition.

If the equipment is damaged, the costs of repair and replacement are at his expense.

To ensure that your wood-burning stove works optimally, provides you with pleasant thermal comfort and avoids the risk of fire, it is important to clean your equipment regularly.

As a general rule, if you use firewood, whatever your heating device (mass stove, pellet stoves, log stove, pellet stoves, etc.), install a smoke detector (compulsory since 2015 ) and carbon monoxide in prevention.
