In explaining the lawsuit, the state representatives wrote: "This is one of the most serious, wide-ranging and ramified cases of corruption known in our districts."

Along with Kirschenbaum, the state is also suing the former Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture Rami Cohen, who was also convicted of bribery.

"The defendants acted in a systematic, sophisticated and cunning manner, within the framework of a large number of cases, in order to promote their personal benefit and well-being at the expense of public funds, while trampling on the public interest and proper administration.

"They illegally withdrew funds from the state coffers and caused heavy damages to the state, as detailed above. In light of the seriousness of the affair and the damage caused to the state, the state, which believes in protecting the public coffers, is obligated to act to recover the funds, to reduce the damage caused to it and to deter the defendants financially, by filing this lawsuit." written in the statement of claim.

"They took public money for themselves"

As you may recall, in March 2021, former minister Kirschenbaum was convicted of bribery, money laundering, fraud, tax offenses, breach of trust, and more, while Cohen was convicted of many crimes of bribery, money laundering, and more.

In the verdict it was determined that Kirschenbaum used her governmental power as the person in charge of the distribution of the coalition funds of the "Israel Beitno" party, and took about NIS 2 million from the public funds, while Rami Cohen took advantage of his connections in the party and took, among other things, a bribe of about NIS 99 thousand from the basketball association and asked from its association An additional amount of NIS 100,000.

After hearing the appeals they submitted, Kirschenbaum's sentence was set at 7.5 years of actual imprisonment;

Cohen was sentenced to 18 months in prison, a fine of NIS 180,000 and more.
