The town hall and the diocese of Angoulême agree to say: "
planting a tree
" on the forecourt of Saint-Pierre cathedral is impossible.
After nearly two years of discussions and consultation on the subject with the Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing (DREAL), Pascal Monier, Deputy Mayor for Town Planning and Ecology, annoyed by such a recommendation received at the beginning of December at the town hall.
"
We are obviously sensitive to the greening of public spaces
", he says, "
but not in this place where the objective is to ensure the safety of pedestrians
".
Subject to the flow of cars, the place is surveyed by nearly 2,000 high school and college students educated in the old town.
“
The site classified as a historic monument is remarkable, it is a pedestrian, road and event space.
The natural objective is not a priority in this development
”, argues Pascal Monier.
According to the elected official, the place especially needs a bus shelter to simplify the journeys of the students.

The bishop of Angoulême is worried about the aesthetic aspect of the square.
"
We have a magnificent facade which has just been restored, it would be a shame to spoil the view by planting a tree
", describes the monk.
