On December 13, ARD will broadcast the semifinals of the World Cup in Qatar.

Argentina and Croatia meet in the game.

Eight broadcasts were cut for the game's air date.

Berlin – The World Cup in Qatar was ill-fated long before kick-off.

The human rights violations and controversial views of the host country have been the basis for lively debates for months, while many football fans and celebrities are calling for the otherwise celebrated sporting event to be boycotted.

While the World Cup is usually an occasion to wave colorful flags and celebrate with friends, the waves of enthusiasm are clearly restrained this year.

Semi-finals on free TV: ARD is canceling eight shows because of the World Cup in Qatar

Despite the controversy surrounding the world's biggest football competition, fans were rooting for the German national team and hoping for a world title - which would certainly have helped to forget the bitter aftertaste of the tournament.

But it wasn't to be - and the team had to admit defeat despite a 4-2 win against Costa Rica on December 1st.

The World Cup in Qatar: A controversial major sporting event

The soccer World Cup has been running in Qatar since November 20th.

Usually it's weeks of excitement and anticipation, but this time scandal and controversy cast a shadow over the event.

Above all, the questionable conditions that prevailed during the construction of the new stadiums and led to many deaths were sharply criticized in advance by organizations such as Amnesty International.

Human rights violations such as the unequal treatment of women and the ban on homosexuality in Qatar also give the competition a bitter aftertaste and lead to calls for boycotts worldwide.

Of course, the end for the German team does not mean the end of the World Cup and the remaining games will continue to be broadcast as before - partly on free TV, partly with private streaming providers.

This means that the sports fans, who are still in the mood for the World Cup even after their favorite athletes have been eliminated, will not miss any of the important moments.

The popular soap "In aller Freundlich" usually runs on Tuesday evenings.

On December 13, however, the cult show has to give way to the World Cup semifinals between Argentina and Croatia.

On Tuesday evening (December 13), Argentina and Croatia will meet in the first semi-final of the World Cup from 6:50 p.m. and fight for the much-coveted entry into the grand final on Sunday (December 18).

In order to make room for the decisive game, ARD has emptied the calendar accordingly and canceled eight popular programs from the evening program - including two episodes of the soap "In aller Freundlich".

According to the ARD calendar, the "Tagesschau", which is scheduled for 8 p.m. every evening, runs at 8:50 p.m. instead.

These eight ARD programs are canceled because of the World Cup semifinals:

  • "WaPo Bodensee"

    (6:50 p.m.)

  • "Knowledge Before Eight - Nature"

    (7:45 p.m.)

  • "Weather before eight"

    (7:50 p.m.)

  • "Economy before eight"

    (7:55 p.m.)

  • "Daily News"

Big World Cup final on December 18: TV shows will also be canceled on Sunday

The second World Cup semi-final between France and Morocco and the subsequent “sportstudio live” will be shown on ZDF on Wednesday (December 14) and will also replace the regular evening program there until “Markus Lanz” starts broadcasting at 10:30 p.m.

The grand finale, on the other hand, will again be broadcast on ARD on December 18 – but it will start at 3:00 p.m.

Despite the colossal sporting event, nothing stands in the way of the "Tatort" evening with loved ones - on Sunday with the cases of "The Victim" at 8:15 p.m. and "Hunting" at 9:45 p.m.

There are still a few days until the final whistle, but in terms of quotas, the World Cup in Qatar is already well behind previous tournaments.

As

reports, the clash between Germany and Costa Rica reached this year's high with 53.7 percent of 14 to 49 year olds, but is well behind the viewing figures for previous German World Cup games, which were up to 80 percent for the same target group percent of the market share.

Even in the celebrity world, the major sporting event met with little approval: "Bergdoktor" star Hans Sigl handed out against Qatar's World Cup ambassador.
