It is not always easy to clean a fabric sofa. Here are some tips that will help you find a clean sofa in good condition!

A fabric sofa is sometimes difficult to maintain, even more difficult to clean, because textiles are often delicate materials.

If the fabric sofa has a removable cover, it will suffice to wash the cover in the machine or in the dry cleaners, respecting the recommended programme.

If it is not, however, there are very effective remedies to overcome the dirt.

Dry clean a sofa a fabric

The vacuum cleaner is rather a way of keeping a sofa and its fabric cushions clean and free of dust.

Using a microfiber cloth is also good for removing dust particles.

It is a habit to get into, because it prevents dirt from becoming insidiously embedded.

Also, if the sofa is found to get stains, it is easier to remove the stains if the sofa is well maintained.

If the fabric of the sofa is fragile, dry cleaning is preferable to washing with water.

What's more, the colors may rub off.

For this purpose, there are special aerosol foams that can be sprayed over the entire surface to be cleaned and then brushed off.

Another more natural solution for cleaning a fabric sofa: the unbeatable baking soda.

After depositing the bicarbonate powder directly on the fabric, leave to act for one to two hours, then vacuum the powder with a vacuum cleaner.

Clean a fabric sofa: washing with water

If cleaning the sofa with water is possible (refer to the recommendations indicated if applicable), a shampoo specially designed for cleaning textiles or a homemade solution can be used without hesitation.

Rule n° 1: to apply the product in question, it should always be placed on a soft bristle brush or on a clean sponge, never directly on the fabric of the sofa.

For rinsing, a damp sponge can be used, without soaking the textile in order to avoid halos.

How do you remove food and drink stains from a fabric sofa?

To remove food or drink stains, white vinegar (500ml) with a tablespoon of washing up liquid is the winning combination.

The mixture is to be incorporated into 200 ml of lukewarm water.

Grease stains will easily come off with talc or flour placed directly on the stain.

Ditto for the earth of Sommières which is an outstanding natural degreaser.

The powder (talc, flour or earth of Sommières) will then be removed with a vacuum cleaner.

Ammonia: to be reserved for stubborn stains

Ammonia should be handled with care, as it is a product that can be harmful.

Before using it on stubborn stains that are difficult to remove (here ammonia will be particularly indicated), you must use gloves to protect your hands, or even a mask to avoid inhaling the product.

To prepare an infallible solution, or almost, against all types of stains, pour a few drops of ammonia in a bowl of warm water to promote its dilution, then add a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid.

Dip a clean sponge into the mixture and wring it out well before applying it to the fabric sofa.

Then rinse with clear water.

Regardless of the product applied, halos may remain.

It is then possible to superficially apply the stain-removing solution to the entire coating and then rinse gently with a damp washcloth.

To dry the fabric quickly, using a hair dryer by positioning it on cold or lukewarm air so as not to heat the fabric too much is a good option.

The winning duo for maintaining and cleaning a fabric sofa is therefore to dust it regularly and wash it over its entire surface and thoroughly, ideally once a year.

In case of accidental stains, the key word is responsiveness.

The stain remover product to apply will then depend on the nature of the stain and the sensitivity of the fabric.
