Kretschmann: The federal government must decide on deportation

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann does not want to pass judgment in the dispute over the deportation of criminals to dangerous regions.

"The federal government decides who can be deported and where," said the Green politician on Tuesday in Stuttgart.

"They decide that - and not us." The background is the debate about a young Afghan who raped a 14-year-old girl in a refugee home in Illerkirchberg with other men in 2019.

Justice Minister Marion Gentges (CDU) had campaigned for the federal government to have the man deported to Afghanistan.

She therefore wrote to Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faser (SPD).

Kretschmann reacted rather distantly to the activities of his justice minister on Tuesday.

"She can write letters as she sees fit," he said.

"I think the federal government has to decide that." He has the basis for making decisions and can determine where deportations can and cannot be made.

Kretschmann also emphasized that, for technical reasons alone, it is currently not possible to deport people to Afghanistan because no planes could land there under the current conditions.

The federal government had suspended deportations to Afghanistan due to the security situation.
