The Likud party informed the coalition partners today (Tuesday) that the grandson clause in the Law of Return will not be repealed.

Instead, she proposes to establish a committee whose role will be to prevent the phenomenon of immigrants to Israel who abuse the rights granted to immigrants to Israel.

About a week ago, the chairman of religious Zionism, MK Bezalel Smotrich, said that he intends to meet the demand of religious Zionism and the ultra-Orthodox parties to cancel the grandson clause in the Law of Return as part of the summaries for the formation of the next government.

This, after Prime Minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu said the day before in an interview with NBC that he estimates that the change to the section will not pass in the next coalition headed by him.

"We will stand by it, it is one of the biggest threats to Israeli demography, to the Jewish identity of the country and assimilation," said Smotrich in an interview with ultra-Orthodox radio Kol Barama.

"This is a social and Jewish time bomb that must be dealt with. We insist on it and will continue to insist on it.

The grandson section is section 4a added to the Law of Return in 1970. This section grants the rights to the son or spouse, son, and grandson of a Jew, regardless of whether the Jew is still alive and if he immigrates to Israel together with his relatives.

The data published by the Knesset recently show that in 2020, about 72% of the immigrants under this section are not Jewish.

In an interview on NBC, Netanyahu said that there would be no change in the clause, but then elaborated: "There will be a long and in-depth discussion, but I doubt that there will be a change. It will require an in-depth discussion - you don't do it overnight. You know, I've always looked for creativity on these issues, and also to help with conversion issues, and I always tried to think of solutions outside the box."
