The bill that aims to pave the way for Shas chairman Aryeh Deri to the position of minister was approved this evening (Tuesday) in a preliminary reading.
According to the bill, the provisions of the Basic Law of the Government will be amended so that it is written that only a person who has been convicted of an offense punishable by imprisonment and who has been charged with defamation will not be able to serve as a minister.
In Deri's case, he was sentenced to, among other things, a suspended prison sentence and in return he resigned from the previous Knesset from his position as MK.

This proposal was one of three proposals that the consolidating coalition intends to pass.
Another proposal is an amendment to the basic law: the government will subordinate the civil administration to the minister in the Ministry of Defense - which, according to the coalition agreement, will be Smotrich, or someone on his behalf.
The third proposal is an amendment to the police order that will allow the designated minister of national security, Itamar Ben Gabir, to make decisions regarding the police's enforcement policy.
Another proposal they would like to pass: an amendment to the police order.
