Éric Ciotti was elected president of the Republicans last Sunday by winning 53.7% of the 62,586 votes of party members, thus beating Bruno Retailleau.

This is the eighth time that members of the main party of the French right have been invited to elect their president.
And twice, they voted to appoint their presidential candidate.
The first time was in December 1999. The RPR had been in opposition since its dissolution in 1997 and had just suffered the trauma of the abrupt resignation of Philippe Séguin.
Nicolas Sarkozy renouncing this race after the failure of the Europeans, no natural figure was essential.
This 1999 election was therefore both a first democratic experience for the RPR as well as a genuine competition.
