A dog owner wanted to pull her dog out of the ice-cold Isar Canal - and in the end had to be rescued herself.

Unterföhring – On Monday morning, walkers rescued a woman from the ice-cold Isar canal.

She had tried to get her dog out of the water.

The lady was walking her dog on the canal embankment when the animal fell into the water.

When trying to pull it out again, she slipped into the ice-cold water herself.

She was no longer able to reach the shore under her own power, as the low temperatures threatened to quickly cause her to become fatally hypothermic.

Rescue operation Unterföhring: woman was already severely hypothermic

However, the woman was lucky in misfortune.

Attentive walkers noticed their dangerous situation and rushed to help, as reported by the municipality of Unterföhring.

They took the woman out of the Isar canal near the Leinthaler Bridge and saved her life.

The rescue went as follows: The passers-by correctly called the emergency number first and pulled the woman out of the water with the help of a lifebelt.

The woman was already severely hypothermic and weakened.

She came to the hospital for an examination.

Her dog was also severely hypothermic – the woman's husband, who had meanwhile arrived, took care of him.

Rescue operation Unterföhring: Luckily there was a lifebelt

The rescue operation was only possible so quickly and easily thanks to the rescue stations, which go back to an initiative from the 2020 citizens' assembly.

In the spring of 2022, stations with lifebelts and rescue poles were set up between the Leinthaler Bridge and the bridge on Münchner Straße at intervals of 500 meters.

The rescue stations were financed by the municipality.
