The renovation work on the tower of the parish church of St. Margaretha has been completed and the dome shines in new splendor, but it goes on: the renovation of the roof of the nave is pending.

She is scheduled to start carpentry work in March 2023.

Pemmering – Now you can see it clearly: The renovation work on the tower of the Pemmering parish church of St. Margaretha has been completed.

For a few days the tower of the church has finally been without emergency safety and scaffolding.

Numerous companies, from carpenters to plumbers, have been working on the tower since the end of July.

Not only were the damaged parts in the area of the tower roof truss renewed and the tower bulb re-boarded and sheeted, the dials and hands of the tower clock were also revised, the bell drive rebuilt and the ascent redesigned.

Before the work could be carried out, the damage had to be mapped, which served as the basis for the repair details by the structural engineer.

"That was about 400 photo documents," says church curator Hans Angermaier.

The master bricklayer and construction engineer not only professionally accompanied the renovation, he was also the initiator of the unusual emergency backup, which was carried out in 2020.

Instead of implementing the professor's original suggestion and removing the tower cap and sealing it with a lid or securing it with a permanent scaffolding, standard tension belts were attached with the active support of carpenter Anton Reich from Isen.

"That was done in a few hours and only cost us 500 euros," says Angermaier happily.

It had been known for some time that the tower erected in 1902 was due for renovation.

And the church curator was also aware of the defects: Over the years, the water that had penetrated through damaged areas on the sheet metal cover had caused damage to the substance of some wooden components.

Already in September 2019, representatives of the professorship got an impression of the need for renovation during an on-site visit, but they could not promise a quick implementation.

Your suggestion to avert the danger that could arise from the dilapidated tower dome therefore referred to the emergency backup.

Church caretaker Angermaier explains the leaks in the roof, which are responsible for the further damage, among other things with the change of the church bells, which made interventions necessary.

In 1949, the melted bells were replaced by three new bells from the Czudnochowsky bell foundry in Erding.

And around 14 years ago, lightning even struck the onion.

The steeple of the parish church of St. Margaretha was built in 1902/03.

Its predecessor burned down in 1776 and was replaced by a temporary small wooden tower.

Angermaier is particularly pleased that the original estimate was reduced from 150,000 euros to 140,000 euros and that it was ultimately undercut.

However, the work on the parish church does not end with the renovation of the tower.

"The renovation of the roof of the nave is scheduled to begin in March 2023 with the carpentry work," says project manager Tobias Priesemuth from the architectural office Rieger Lohmann Architekten.

Here, dilapidated wooden components and defective ridge points have to be replaced, wood pests have to be fought and the wall bank has to be partially renewed and levelled.

"The roof outlives us all," says Angermaier about the old roof of the nave, which was built in 1777 and re-covered around 20 years ago.

However, there is damage in the area of the walled-in beams because moisture has penetrated through the masonry.

"The roof stays up, it will be renovated in sections," he explains the planned procedure.

The renovation of the church roof will not only be more complex, but also more expensive: the planners expect the construction work to cost 380,000 euros.

"We will have to cram everything we have into the parish church," says Angermaier.

But he also hopes for the support of the Pemmering people.

They already proved in 2011 that they stand by the church in their village when they did their own paving and tar work.

He also hopes that he will continue to be supported by the members of the church administration, Theo Stiglmeier, Roman Geißenhof and Virgil Weizenbeck, the parish council and the sacristan team Regina Gaigl and Claudia Lanzl.

Pastor Josef Kriechbaumer is particularly pleased that the nave will continue in March.

"I expected that it would take ten to 15 years and that I wouldn't see the renovation before I retired," he says.

He is also relieved that the district has already promised 22,000 euros for the renovation of St. Margaretha and that the Isen market is contributing the obligatory three percent subsidy.

Some donations from banks, the church administration and from a bazaar have already been received.

"I hope that our own contribution will be less than 100,000 euros," he says.

The chair bears the lion's share of the renovation: it covers 85 percent of the costs.
