40 years ago, an unknown person stole a historical book from the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth.

Now he brought it back – with a curious reasoning.

Bayreuth – For the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth it is an “unexpected pre-Christmas present”, as stated in a statement.

About 40 years ago, an unknown person stole a book from the Wahnfried library, originally signed by Richard Wagner in August 1876.

Strictly speaking, it is the title "Frederick the Great and German Literature" by Heinrich Pröhle, Berlin 1872. Now it suddenly appeared again.

Theft from a museum cleared up after 40 years: the background of a love story

"Now the unlawful owner has returned his loot through a Bayreuth middleman out of later remorse," it continues.

To the delight of the museum.

Apparently there was a love story behind the theft.

Stealing the book was a "questionable test of courage as a peculiar proof of love".

Whether the successful test of courage for the thief in matters of love led to success is not disclosed by the museum or rather by the unknown.

The museum does not reveal the identity of the perpetrator, "especially since further legal prosecution of the matter is not possible anyway, since the act has now become statute-barred." Rather, the museum is pleased that Richard Wagner's book is now back in its place in can return to the Wahnfried library.

Just a few weeks ago, a theft of millions shook the museum world.

Unknown persons stole 483 gold coins from the Celtic Museum in Manching, the investigation is ongoing.
