More refugees came to Germany this year than during the “asylum crisis” of 2015/2016.

This poses considerable challenges for the district in terms of accommodation and integration.

District

– 1897 refugees have been admitted to the Weilheim-Schongau district since the beginning of the year.

This extremely high number is mainly due to the fact that 1571 war refugees from the Ukraine found refuge in the district.

In addition, there were another 326 refugees from other countries, as the district office announced at the request of the local newspaper.

However, the office was not able to put an exact figure on how many refugees are now living in the district.

"A total number cannot be given because the local and central immigration authorities have different responsibilities," it said.

What is clear, however, is that some of the Ukrainians have already left the district and/or Germany.

Of the 1,571 who were registered here during the year, 1,335 are still living in the Weilheim-Schongau district.

282 asylum procedures are currently in progress

At the moment there are also 282 asylum seekers in the district, for whom the local immigration office is responsible and whose procedures are currently underway.

In addition, there are persons who are responsible for the Central Immigration Office.

The district office could not say how many there are.

This is how many refugees the individual communities in the district have taken in.

157 people are currently tolerated in the district.

This means that their asylum procedure has been rejected, but they will not be deported immediately for various reasons.

Here, too, the district office makes it clear that these figures only refer to the refugees in its area of responsibility.

Deportations are comparatively rare.

This year, six deportations were carried out under the responsibility of the district, in which refugees were sent back to their home countries.

The immense number of refugees naturally causes considerable problems with accommodation.

Statistically 37 people arrive in the county per week, in fact it is usually a full tour bus every two weeks.

According to the district office, the occupants of the bus that arrived last week could be accommodated.

There is also accommodation for the refugees who are expected next week.

17 objects with 643 places are newly rented

"We still have 17 properties for which the leases have already been concluded," the local newspaper said.

Applications for a change of use have already been submitted or approved for some of these properties, improvements are being made to the buildings or final negotiations are still pending with the landlords.

My space

"The plans are now up to April 30, 2023. We assume that there will be space for a total of 643 refugees in these properties," the district office continued.

This is also urgently needed, since the Ukrainian war refugees in particular have to move from the private living space that has been made available to decentralized accommodation.

"In addition, the wave of refugees has picked up speed again and the anchor centers in the Free State are full," it continues.

Gyms reviewed but not yet scheduled for occupancy

Of course, free-standing buildings in the district were also used.

"The former vocational school in Weilheim is already occupied by Ukrainian war refugees," according to the district office.

They did not want to comment on rumors that the lease of another large property in Weilheim would be signed shortly: "We will only report completion when we have signed leases."

According to the current status, it cannot be ruled out that gymnasiums will again be used as asylum accommodation in the coming weeks or months.

"However, we are trying to prevent this through further rentals and other solutions in order not to unduly restrict the regular sports activities of schools and clubs after the corona-related restrictions," it continues.

In order to be able to continue to cope with the influx of refugees, the district office turns to the citizens with a request for help: “We are always looking for living space, developed or undeveloped commercial space, single-family or multi-family houses and the like.

If citizens would like to rent such objects to us, please contact them at 0881/681-1444, -1437, -1659, -1590 or -1457.
