Colorful letters on the wall above the physics hall: the students of class 8b designed a graffiti with an important message at the southern school.

Bad Tölz – Human dignity is inviolable.

That is in article one of our constitution.

And not only there.

Recently, this important sentence has also adorned the facade of the Tölzer Südschule.

Graffiti project at the Tölzer Südschule: video served as inspiration for religious education teacher Brigitte Bürkel

Class 8b attached article one as graffiti to the wall above the Physics Hall under the leadership of religious education teacher Brigitte Bürkel and together with Holzkirchner artist Sandro Thomas.

"A video inspired me to do this," says initiator Brigitte Bürkel in the playground of the Tölzer Südschule.

It's a cold morning.

And yet the 8b students are standing in the playground.

There the lettering is being sprayed in bright colors on the school facade.

“Open doors rushed in” at school management

“When I presented my idea to the school administration, I ran into open doors.

The topic of "dignity" is very much in favor at our school," says Bürkel happily.

She carries out the graffiti project as part of "School-related youth work of the Evangelical Church of Bavaria".

In return, she receives project hours from the Evangelical State Church.

The teachers Franz Kraft and Alex Keil supported her in the project.

The finished lettering now adorns the school building.

Lettering was determined in a competition

In advance, the lettering that should decorate the school building was determined in a competition in class 8b.

The sentence was already given to the students.

The lettering was then selected according to the criteria of technical feasibility.

Finally, it had to be attached to the wall as a stencil.

Aya Mahjoub won.

"I just tried it and thought it was worth a try," says the student.

She likes that her design won and that something of her stays with the school even when she is no longer there.

Street artist Sandro Thomas is involved in the project

Before the prefabricated foil with the lettering from the Tölz painting company Egger was attached to the outside wall of the school, the company primed the wall white.

Then it was the students turn.

Together with the street artist Sandro Thomas, they sprayed the individual letters with paint from motley spray cans.

"This is my first project in Tölz," explains Thomas.

"I like working with children and I'm also a prospective street worker." The subject of "dignity" is important to the artist.

"You can convey something with the project," he says.

And: “The students get to know each other better.

Once again you can see that art connects people.”

Children should get an idea of what dignity means

Aya Mahjoub and Thalia Ortner, who took second place in the competition, designed the lettering in their free time.

"That's not a matter of course," says Bürkel.

The religious education teacher's vision is that after four years, when the children pass by the colorful lettering day in and day out, they will have an idea of what dignity means.

"Then we have gained a lot as a society." She hopes that the project will find imitators.

The government of Upper Bavaria supports the project financially.
