During the Advent season, it reliably shone far across Lake Tegernsee.
But this year the lights on Uli Hoeneß' giant Christmas tree will remain dark.
In return, he donates tons of sausage to the Tafel.
Bad Wiessee – The idea came up at a meal with Paul Breitner.
The soccer world champion in 1974 has been involved with the Münchner Tafel for many years.
Breitner told his friend Uli Hoeneß that the number of people seeking help was growing.
That the donated food is no longer enough, meat and sausage are in short supply.
"I thought to myself, something can be done about that," says Hoeneß.
Together with his son Florian - he and his sister own HoWe Wurstwaren KG Nuremberg - the former FC Bayern boss considered how the company could help.
Food banks in need: Hoeneß donates tons of crooked sausage
The Hoeneß company now donates around 1.5 tons of sausage per week to the “Münchner Tafel” – and 300 kilograms to the “Gmunder Tafel”.
In turn, they pass on the goods to the Tafel in Holzkirchen, Miesbach and Bad Tölz.
Sausages that got a bit crooked during production are donated.
In earlier times, the optically not quite perfect goods went to the factory outlet at a low price.
"They all taste great, I like to eat them myself with fried potatoes and onions," says Hoeneß.
HoWe boss Florian Hoeneß is now having the sausages sorted out vacuum-packed to make them durable for a few weeks and donating them to the banks.
The logistics are quite complex.
A large truck is needed to deliver to the Munich food bank.
A refrigerated truck is sufficient for the Gmunder Tafel.
"We do it ourselves," says Uli Hoeneß.
The delivery has been underway for a few weeks - without a time limit.

How many sausages are donated depends on the production in the sausage factory, reports Hoeneß.
But on average it is 1.5 tons every one to two weeks.
In order to bring the entire amount to the Tafel, HoWe professionalized the process.
There are enough buyers.
"The sausages are tearing away," says Hoeneß.
"And we enjoy it when we can help people."
No Christmas tree in dark times: Uli Hoeneß' fir tree over Lake Tegernsee remains dark
The Hoeneß family denies themselves another joy this year.
The huge spruce in the garden in front of her house will not become a sparkling Christmas tree this year, the largest in the Tegernsee Valley.
The decision to give up was difficult for him, says Hoeneß.
"And I get asked about it so often." But at the moment he doesn't want to use so much energy.
"And I don't want to provoke anyone either."

Uli Hoeneß's Christmas tree shone so beautifully in previous years
The tree that Hoeneß has illuminated with 900 lights in better times is a good 30 meters high.
A specialist company spent two days turning the spruce into a mega Christmas tree.
It is best visible from Tegernsee.
"That's why I got very nice letters from people we don't even know," reports Hoeneß.
He knows: The Christmas tree will be missed this year.
Next year, he believes, the tree will be able to shine again, more beautiful than ever: "I have great hopes for that."
By the way: everything from the region is also available in our regular Tegernsee newsletter.
