With the appearance of more and more cases of rabies in the Emek Ma'ain and Gilboa area, it was discovered that in the last year Jordan did not approve the spreading of baits in its territory. The same lures that attract foxes and jackals are the only effective solution to the incurable disease

Following the appearance of a ninth case of rabies in the Emek Ma'ain and Gilboa area - it became clear that in the past year no baits with rabies vaccine were spread on the eastern side of the Jordan, the territory of the State of Jordan.

The Ministry of Agriculture responded today (Tuesday) to Walla's question, and according to them the distribution of baits in Jordanian territory depends on the approval of the Jordanian army, which was not received last year.

The rabies vaccination project is the main component in the fight against the spread of the disease in Israel.

This project is implemented by the Nature and Parks Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture.

This is a vaccine intended for foxes and jackals, given by scattering baits that contain the stored material.

The baits are thrown from light pilot craft and look like small brown matchboxes, with a smell that attracts foxes and jackals.

When the animal bites them, it punctures a bag containing the stored material, and thus the material enters its mouth and causes its vaccination.

The size of the bait is adjusted to the size and shape of the jaw, and allows for a particularly high certainty that when it is eaten, the animal will be vaccinated.

The baits are thrown from light aircraft, the animals bite them and get vaccinated.

In addition to scattering the baits in the territories of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the West Bank, there was an agreement between Israel and Jordan that it would be possible to scatter the baits also in the territory of the state of Jordan, near the border with Israel.

In 2017, after the political crisis between Israel and Jordan, following the security guard incident at the Israeli embassy, the Jordanians did not approve the operation.

This year there was an outbreak of rabies in the eastern region of the Jezreel Valley.

Furthermore, there have been several cases in which jackals infected with rabies have bitten humans: a girl was bitten inside her house in Beit Shan and travelers were bitten near Ein Harod.

Last week, another case of female rabies was discovered that was caught in Kibbutz Hafziva, and from the investigation of the case it was found that the source of the disease is in Jordanian territory.

At the same time, the fear of infiltration of rabies cases from the territories of the Palestinian Authority is also increasing.

This, after three weeks ago a case of rabies was discovered in Moshav Mela in the Ta'anach region, adjacent to the PA's territories.

To Walla's question, the Ministry of Agriculture said that cooperation with the Palestinian Authority to reduce the spread of the disease is limited.

The Palestinian Authority's difficulty in dealing with rabies can be learned from the request made by the mayor of Hebron to the city's residents last month, to kill dogs.

He even offered a payment of 20 shekels for each carcass of a dog that was killed.

A similar phenomenon occurred in Jordan five years ago, after a girl died of rabies following a bite.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that "it is worth noting that aerial dispersal takes place every year over the territories of the Palestinian Authority."

It was also reported that "the Ministry of Agriculture continues to work to reduce the spread of rabies. In the last few days, a rabies-infected bull was diagnosed in the Emek region, apparently originating from Jordan. In this context and in light of the current outbreak, two intensive dispersals of baits for oral vaccination from the ground were carried out in the summer and fall, as well as aerial dispersal in the Emek region The springs last weekend. In total, three rounds of dispersals were carried out in the last four months."

The latest cases of rabies in the valleys indicate a worrying trend: all of last year, 2021, there was only one case of rabies in this area, the other cases were in the Golan Heights, the Upper Galilee and the Western Galilee.

In other words, most of the rabies cases probably came from Syria.

On the other hand, since the beginning of this year there have been a total of 29 cases of rabies, all in the north.

Which shows that most measles cases come from Jordan or the PA territories.

Rabies is an incurable disease caused by a virus.

From the moment the first clinical signs appear in humans or animals, there is no possibility of saving the patient, and death is certain.

The rabies virus affects all mammals, and is transmitted in saliva, mainly by biting.

The disease can be prevented in animals with a vaccine given ahead of time, and in humans through a series of vaccination injections that are given after exposure to the virus and protect against the development of the disease.

2002 was the last time a woman died in Israel from rabies.

Before that, in 1997, 3 people died in Israel from rabies, including a soldier.

Most of the cases are discovered near the border areas.

The State of Israel is surrounded by countries, where the disease is not treated and prevented by the authorities, both within domestic animals and within wild animals.

The source of the outbreak of the disease stems from constant infiltration of the rabies virus by wild animals from the neighboring countries - Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, as well as from the Palestinian Authority.
