In the USA and Germany, calls for a higher tax on the wealthy have recently become louder.

But it could affect more people than you think.

Munich – Very few Germans would describe themselves as particularly wealthy.

In fact, mathematically every eighth person is rich.

That's what Schippke Wirtschaftsberatung calculated.

Accordingly, a single household with a net income of around 3350 euros is one of the richest 12 percent of all German citizens.

According to Sparkasse.de's gross-net calculator, that's around 5,600 euros on the payslip.

The bottom line is that couples are particularly rich

In two-person households, even less is enough to be considered rich: According to Schippke, each partner must earn a net income of 2,500 euros to be considered rich.

Because a couple only needs about 1.5 times as much money as two singles.

This is because they can share many costs.

According to the savings bank calculator, each partner must earn 4,000 euros gross to be among the rich.

At the same time, the traffic light government wants to put a stop to tax-attractive spouse splitting.

Wealth tax: who is affected?

Higher taxation of the rich is repeatedly demanded, most recently Tesla boss Elon Musk was criticized.

In Germany, the Greens recently wanted to increase the top tax rate to 48 percent.

High earners currently pay 42 percent.

The rate currently applies from an annual gross income of 57,919 euros, i.e. around 4900 euros per month.

The threshold will be raised to EUR 58,597 next year.

The rich tax rate of 45 percent is due from an annual income of 274,613 euros, in the coming year it is due 277,826 euros.

That's more than 23,000 euros per month.

Double the value applies to married couples.

The limits for the top and wealthy tax rates have so far been lower, so incomes that are just above the limit are relieved.

There is resistance to possible increases, because Germans always pay the top tax rate.
