Latakia - SANA

The maritime transport sector is one of the important strategic sectors that contribute to the process of development and economic growth in general and to supply the balance of payments with foreign exchange necessary to cover the necessary activities of the national economy.

Despite the difficulties and unilateral coercive measures imposed on the country in general and on the Maritime Transport Corporation and its ships in particular, represented by the increase in insurance fees and fuel prices that increase the cost of maritime transport to Syria, the Maritime Transport Corporation was able during the year 2022, according to its Director General, Engineer Hassan Mahalla, to transport about 202 thousand tons of goods on board its ships, with a completion rate of nearly 90 percent of its plan for the year 2022, achieving revenues that exceeded 23 billion pounds to date.

A local told SANA that the Corporation owns three modern ships, which are the bulk cargo carrier Phoenicia, with a tonnage of 18,000 tons, and the two ships, Syria and Odessa, which are heavy and general cargo carriers, with a tonnage of approximately 12,700 tons each. The Corporation’s sailing boat is in accordance with the standards of international maritime training and qualification, by benefiting from the experiences of friendly countries to develop and expand the Corporation’s work in accordance with the current and exceptional circumstances.

Within the framework of government directives and on the difficulties faced by the Syrian maritime transport sector and the repercussions of the blockade on it, Dr. Maan Dayoub, Vice President of Tishreen University for Open Education Affairs and a specialist in maritime transport economics, explained that the maritime transport industry is an integrated industry characterized by logistical, technological, legal, social, political and natural dimensions. It is an integrated field that contributes to improving The economic situation, pointing out that the current situation is exceptional and the economic sanctions imposed on Syria and on insurance companies require high insurance fees that lead to an increase in the cost of maritime transport.

He pointed out that the maritime transport sector is linked, like any other economic sector, to costs and returns and its impact on the current conditions and competition between companies related to regulatory issues, management of ports and harbors, improving the quality of maritime transport and financial investments in the maritime transport sector, in addition to the legal and legislative system, customs facilities, administrative facilities, tax system, technological system and the availability of media. Transport.

Diop pointed out that the global economy is currently facing a crisis in the field of fuel. As for visiting and local ships, the lack of fuel in Syria as a result of Western sanctions against it prevents it from providing services to visiting foreign ships, forcing them to obtain their services from other ports, which constitutes a loss of revenues from transportation fees, maintenance and repair services, and supplies. And supplying ships with the necessary means for them and other revenues that are recorded in the trade balance as receipts that support the national economy.

Dayoub indicated that the unfair sanctions against Syria and its impact on the Syrian ports, in addition to the lack of modern technology to receive ships and the integrated logistical system that contributes to accelerating the process of unloading goods and their arrival to the final consumer, are things that impede the development of the work environment and increase productivity and revenues.
