Having breakfast with a view of happy birds at the feeder - what a beautiful idea.

This is good for the little animals.

Miesbach/district

- Especially now, when the temperatures fall below zero at night, the birds can use the energy in the morning after a cold night, says Gerhard Kinshofer, district chairman of the State Association for Bird Protection in Bavaria (LBV).

There are a few rules you should follow when feeding, he knows.

Not only for the well-being of the animals, but also for the well-being of the people.

How come?

Ambrosia is the keyword here.

Ambrosia artemisiifolia – ragweed – is a flowering plant native to North America but introduced to Europe with soil and especially bird seed.

The pollen and contact with the seeds can cause severe allergic reactions.

Kinshofer therefore advises buying birdseed only from specialist retailers or shops that guarantee that the food is free from ragweed seeds.

Stored feed is no longer edible

Anyone who discovers an ambrosia plant in their garden should pull it out and dispose of it with the residual waste to prevent the neophyte from spreading.

Another argument speaks in favor of avoiding cheap food.

It often contains fillers that the birds don't even eat and that just fall off and soil the ground under the feeder.

“It is also possible that unsold feed has been stored and will be offered again next winter.

But the birds don't eat that at all," says Kinshofer.

Ambrosia is a neophyte.

The selection of feed types is large.

A mixture of grains, seeds, soft food and delicacies such as crushed peanuts offers the right thing for many species.

Kinshofer recommends feeding columns or houses where the feed trickles out of a "silo".

The Oberland workshops, for example, produce such.

It is important that the birds do not defecate in the feed.

Cleanliness in and around the feeding station is a basic rule.

The bottom also needs to be cleaned up regularly and the dirt removed.

You're welcome to hang up an apple.

"Blackbirds, robins and fieldfares like it," says the bird expert.

Even if the apple is frozen, it will be eaten.

Fat balls should be offered in lattice devices.

"It is rare, but it has happened that tits get caught in the net with their claws," explains Kinshofer.

Bread crusts: Not suitable for ducks

Where there is an absolute ban on feeding is with waterfowl.

"They find enough food themselves even in winter," says Kinshofer.

In addition, ducks can even choke on dry bread crusts, for example.

Feeding is vital for many birds over the winter.

But you can feed them all year round, says Miesbacher.

It has not been confirmed that breeding birds provide their young with the wrong food in spring.

If you have a garden, you can do something good for the native birds in a very natural way: with berry bushes, a dense hedge and nesting boxes.

There are many tips for feeding, but also for making the garden bird-friendly, from the State Association for Bird Protection at www.lbv.de.
