A massive storm is making its way across the United States, including tornadoes in parts of Oklahoma and Texas, while the center of the country - from the Rockies to the Midwest - is bracing for a particularly powerful snowstorm.



An area stretching from Montana to western Nebraska and Colorado is under blizzard warnings, and the United States National Weather Service said yesterday (Tuesday) that about 61 cm of snow is expected to fall in some areas of western South Dakota and northwestern Nebraska. Damage was reported in Wayne, Oklahoma after a tornado hit the area yesterday. KOCO TV footage showed significant damage to homes and downed power lines. Power outages, tree damage, fallen branches and dangerous road conditions threaten the area.

All of western Nebraska is under a blizzard warning and according to the weather service, 51 cm of snow is expected to fall combined with 80 mph winds.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation closed highways due to heavy snow and high winds and advised residents to stay indoors.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety tweeted that "this is a storm that cannot be joked about."



Tornadoes, strong winds, hail and flash floods hit eastern Texas, Louisiana and western Mississippi.

The alerts also include Alabama and Florida.

The stormy weather is part of a system that started in the Sierra Nevada over the weekend and dropped a lot of snow in the area.

In northern Utah, a tour bus skidded on the snow and flipped on its side after the driver lost control.

23 passengers were injured, some seriously.



The storm is expected to move into the northeast and central Appalachian Mountains with snow and freezing temperatures, according to the forecast.

To the south, the storm is expected to move toward southwest Mississippi and is accompanied by flash flood warnings.
