Unterallgäu - Is the waste frozen solid in the organic waste bin and the waste disposal was only able to empty the bin partially or not at all?
To prevent this from happening, the Unterallgäu district waste management advisory service has put together some tips for the winter.
Line the bottom of the compost bin with crumpled newspaper, egg cartons or cardboard.
The more liquid there is in the bin, the more likely it is that the waste will freeze solid.
Therefore: Drain the organic waste well.
Pack organic waste in newspaper, kitchen paper or paper bags or use a large paper bag suitable for the organic bin.
Baker's bags without a plastic window are also good, for example - so no additional paper is used.
Do not use plastic bags or magazines and do not use compostable plastic bags.
These are not suitable for the organic waste bin and must be sorted out in the recycling plant.
Use clay litter or rock flour to bind the moisture in the collection container and in the compost bin.
Loosen frozen organic waste from the edge of the bin on the day it is emptied.
Do not provide the organic waste bin for emptying from the warm garage.
The contents then often freeze solid.
If the organic waste bin cannot be emptied despite all efforts, there is a simple solution: In such cases, a box with additional organic waste can be placed on the bin at the next organic waste collection.
The box should fit in the bio bin and not be too big.
If you have any questions, the waste management advice of the district will help on telephone 08261/995-367 and -467.
You can find more information about the bio bin here.
