Sleeping outdoors in wintry temperatures can be deadly.

That's why helpers in Nuremberg try to provide homeless people with at least the essentials.

Nuremberg – It is a struggle for survival every year.

While others are struggling with the high heating costs, the homeless would be happy to have a warm apartment.

Especially with the freezing temperatures at the moment, every night could be the last for the women and men who have to live on the streets in Nuremberg.

The Heinzelmännchen association for OHA e.

V. tries to help you as best it can.

Two homeless people have already died in Nuremberg - and there will probably be more

The BR accompanied two volunteers from the association as they walked through the Franconian metropolis equipped with warm blankets, sleeping mats and sturdy shoes.

Some homeless people only sleep on thin cardboard boxes or cannot keep warm properly.

The hot tea, which the helpers also brought with them, helps temporarily.

Caring for the homeless is a matter close to the heart of the volunteers.

“We are the saving hand at the moment.

A lot of people are dying in the winter anyway.

We've already experienced two this year, and they're probably not the last," reports Mike Schlager to BR.

In Munich, metal spikes have now been installed in a Sparkasse branch so that there are no homeless people there.

Most homeless people are also trapped in a vicious circle.

Many of them turn to alcohol and drugs to numb the cold.

The colder it gets, the more they consume.

Schlager knows that: "Tonight it will be minus ten to minus eleven degrees.

The problem is, the colder it gets, the more people use their addictive substances.

So the ones we meet tonight are unable to take care of themselves or say I'm going to a homeless shelter.”

Urine in the sleeping bag to warm up

Most of the homeless they encounter that night are not in good shape.

They are often dirty and smell like urine.

Schlager knows why: "One factor in keeping warm is that people pee in their sleeping bags, so that warms too.

Of course, this has health and hygiene consequences, but every effort is made here to get a little warmth.”

That's why Schlager appealed to them shortly before the charity festival.

Helping the homeless is not too difficult, he tells BR.

Anyone can donate a pair of warm socks or get a hot drink from the nearest café.

“Yes, that's what I advise people to do, because you get so much back from it.

You also notice what a great feeling it is to just put something of yourself there.” Schlager is convinced that those in need are grateful for the help, even if they can't always show it.

One more reason to be out and about in Nuremberg on Christmas Eve, says Schlager, and then gifts are even distributed.
