An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook the waters off the Hualien District of the Chinese island of Taiwan today, with no reports of human or material damage.
The Xinhua news agency quoted the Chinese Earthquake Networks Center as saying: The epicenter of the tremor was monitored at 23.73 degrees north latitude and 121.79 degrees east longitude, and at a depth of ten kilometers.
Taiwan is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates in the South China Sea, an area prone to earthquakes.
More than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and more than 2,000 people were killed in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1999.
