The French police are hunting for the driver who ran over a 14-year-old boy to death during clashes in Montpellier after the World Cup semi-final match between France and Morocco in which the world champions won 2:0.

At the same time, Mayor Mikael Delafos and the boy's family, Ayman Shmo, call for calm.

Riots broke out in many European cities yesterday, as after every match of the Moroccan national team in the 2022 World Cup. In Montpellier, there were clashes between fans of the Atlas Lions and fans of the French national team, with the police in the middle.

In one of the many centers of riots, some young people tried to tear a French flag from a car, the driver apparently got scared and ran away at a high speed while running over one of those people.

He was injured, rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver did not stop and fled even after the impact.

In "Le Parisien" they said today that the police found the vehicle and know the identity of the driver, but he has not been arrested yet.

The researchers rule out the possibility that this is an action by the extreme right and the current assumption is that he hit Ayman while trying to escape.

The prosecutor of Montpellier who is conducting the investigation said: "After trying to tear his flag from the vehicle, the driver left his lane violently and ran over a 14-year-old boy. The investigation is progressing rapidly with the aim of catching the perpetrator."

The family of the victim issued a statement today: "Ayman's disappearance causes us terrible agony. We want to thank everyone for the messages and consolations. We call for calm and express full confidence in the authorities, the police and the justice system, that the perpetrator will be arrested and punished. One last thing, we ask the media to respect privacy ours and will allow us to grieve in peace."
