Because of the defusing of a World War II bomb, the main train station in Heidelberg has not been approached since late Thursday evening.
There are massive traffic restrictions in the city, said Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (rnv) on Twitter.
The main station was completely closed, the police said.
The bomb was found during construction work.
Heidelberg - Your condition requires "defusing as quickly as possible," said the city.
A large part of Bahnstadt and parts of the Bergheim district would have to be evacuated.
Over 7000 people live in the affected area.
The evacuation is progressing well, it said around 10:30 p.m.
The work would continue well into the night.
The city asked them to look for places to stay outside of the area.
The city will also set up emergency shelters.
