For the second time in a row, France qualified for the final of the Football World Cup on Wednesday evening, winning the semi-final match against Morocco 2-0.

In Nice, as everywhere on the territory, the French supporters expressed their joy in the streets of the Old Town, singing the national anthem, waving blue white red flags and celebrating with dignity the qualification of the Blues in the bars.

The celebration was however punctuated by a certain number of excesses, in particular around Place Masséna and on Avenue Jean Médecin, in the heart of Nice.

Several groups of individuals confronted each other physically, some bands chasing others and sometimes responding with interposed firework mortars.

The CRS quickly arrived on the spot to calm the spirits and disperse the troublemakers.

Many garbage cans were set on fire - when they were not used as a reservoir for projectiles to be launched against the forces of order.

The police used tear gas and fire from defense bullet launchers (LBD) to repel the various groups.

In Cannes, a few individuals attacking the police were also dispersed.

At midnight, the tension gradually subsided and the evening continued peacefully.

According to a report from the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture, 10 individuals were arrested across the department.

For his part, the first deputy mayor of Nice, delegate for Security, Anthony Borré, reported three arrests by municipal police officers.

“Thanks to our network of video protection cameras, we were able to follow them and challenge them.

Zero tolerance for those who spoil the party!”

, he said on Twitter.

Welcoming

"the behavior of the supporters who as a whole were respectful"

, Christian Estrosi also denounced

"the thugs who took advantage of the match to burn garbage cans and try to sow disorder."

And the president of the Republicans and deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes, Éric Ciotti, to recall:

“Sport is the party and certainly not these unbearable violences become far too numerous!”
