The European Parliament classified the famine in Ukraine 90 years ago as genocide.

MEPs condemn the acts that resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians, according to a resolution passed in Strasbourg.

Cruel Russian crimes are currently being committed again against the Ukrainian people - such as the targeted destruction of civilian energy infrastructure in winter, the parliamentarians complain.

Under the responsibility of the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, up to four million people fell victim to the so-called Holodomor (»murder by hunger«) in the years 1932 and 1933 in the Ukraine alone.

The plenary called on Russia, as the successor to the Soviet Union, to apologize for the crimes.

The Bundestag had also classified the Holodomor as genocide almost two weeks ago.

Selenskyj welcomed the Bundestag's decision

The famine as such is indisputable.

However, the answer to the question of whether a targeted, politically desired escalation of the famine in the territory of the Ukraine was a genocide by the Soviet leadership against the people living there is disputed.

The Bundestag and the European Parliament have approved this.

The events are sharply condemned in the application by the traffic light parties and the Union.

»The mass deaths from starvation were not the result of failed harvests, but were the responsibility of the political leadership of the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin.

The Holodomor thus represents a crime against humanity,” it says.

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj expressly welcomed the decision of the Bundestag.

"This is a decision for justice, for truth," Zelenskyy said: "And that is a very important signal for many other countries in the world that Russian revanchism will not succeed in rewriting history."
