2022-12-15T11:30:11.762Z

For 20 years, the TV supplement of Le Figaro and the regional daily press was in partnership with the Miss France committee on the sidelines of the broadcast of the ceremony live on TF1. Discover the anecdotes and manufacturing secrets of the special issue produced each year.

For the candidates for the

Miss France

competition , finding themselves on the front page of the

TV Magazine

specially devoted to the event is a privilege appreciated at its fair value.

"It's an iconic cover"

, slipped us one of the participants in the election of Miss France 2023. Since the establishment of the partnership with our magazine at the end of 2002, the exhibition of the competition has evolved a lot.

At first a simple hook on the sidelines of a main subject, with the general group photo of the participants, Miss France ended up occupying the entire front page each year to highlight the report produced with the candidates during their stay. preparation for the sun.

In turn, our journalists Emmanuel Galiero, Patrice Gascoin, Emmanuelle Litaud and, this year, Sarah Lecoeuvre, accompanied the contenders for the crown alongside the Miss France organization.

How are the candidates for Miss France on the cover of

TV Magazine

chosen?

"The choice is made by the editorial staff before the gathering of candidates in Paris and their departure on a preparatory trip"

, explains Nicolas Vollaire, editor-in-chief of

TV Magazine

.

“At this time, we only have photos of the regional elections and those of social networks.

We collect information from everywhere, we consult their first interviews in the press and on regional television channels.

Then we organize an editorial committee with Philippe Larroque, the editorial director, Paul Delort, the head of the photo department, the journalist involved in the future report and myself.

»

The various exchanges make it possible to identify an initial list of candidates before determining a quartet respecting a geographical diversity of regions.

“We try to put forward four candidates with different profiles, also paying attention to mixing styles: brunettes, blondes and redheads, for example.

»

Once the choice has been made, the Miss France organization is contacted to allow the photo session to be carried out during the preparation trip.

“According to our choice, the four candidates will be placed in the same group of activities during their stay.

Sylvie Tellier gave us an advisory opinion but never decided on the final choice.

Sometimes we followed his advice and sometimes not.

These candidates for Miss France who should have made the cover of

TV Magazine

“At the end of 2014, for the trip to the Dominican Republic, we asked for

Camille Cerf

, representative of Nord-Pas-de-Calais

, a region which had never won the Miss France competition at the time

, recalls Nicolas Vollaire.

At the last minute, on site, the press officer at the time had taken the initiative to deprive us of her to leave her exclusively to

Paris Match

when we were the partner magazine and we had, in principle , priority.

»

The other missed appointment, and not the least, is called

Iris Mittenaere

.

“We had identified her for the Miss France 2016 cover, everyone in the editorial staff had bet on her … except me

, recognizes the editor-in-chief.

I was the only one to say no for historical and statistical reasons since, apart from Miss Paris in 1933 and 1934 and then between 1948 and 1950, never had the same region won two years in a row.

It was another era.

Eventually, Iris Mittenaere won the crown but, in addition, she would later become Miss Universe.

Is the future Miss France still on the cover of

TV Magazine

 ?

Bad tongues have sometimes argued that the partner magazine of the Miss France contest systematically put forward the one who will be crowned a few weeks later.

Either because he would be very well informed, or because he would favor the candidates exposed on the cover.

And yet, since the end of 2002, only Alexandra Rosenfeld (Miss France 2006), Marine Lorphelin (Miss France 2013), Alicia Aylies (Miss France 2017), Maëva Coucke (Miss France 2018), Vaimalama Chaves (Miss France 2019) and Amandine Petit (Miss France 2021) appeared on the front page of

TV Magazine

before receiving their scarf.

That's six out of twenty.

"Over the past ten years, we have 'found' the future Miss France on average half the time because over time, we have gained experience and are able to better identify the candidates who will please the French”

, points out Nicolas Vollaire.

“Our goal is not to have the future Miss France on our cover but to offer the most harmonious photo possible to enhance this beautiful partnership.

Miss Tahiti removed from the top 12 of Miss France 2009

If the number of candidates on the Miss France cover has often been four, it is largely because of the front page made before the Miss France 2009 competition. At the start of the partnership, the publication of the group photo considerably reduced readability and identification of each other.

The choice had been made from a more restricted selection before Miss France 2006 and Miss France 2007. Before Miss France 2012, they were only three.

“Until 2010, the former editorial director of

TV Magazine

made his choice of cover based on the photos available

,” explains Nicolas Vollaire.

Regardless of the regions represented or the number of candidates, it was the aesthetics of the photo that motivated the final choice.

At the end of 2008, to illustrate the preparation trip to Thailand, the choice fell on a large photo of the Tahitian Hinatea Boosie with, below and smaller, six other candidates.

“It was the first time since the start of the Miss France partnership that only one girl found herself on the pre-election cover

, underlines the editor-in-chief.

Upon discovering the publication, Sylvie Tellier had reproached the editor at the time for this choice.

The consequence for this Miss Tahiti is to have been

excluded from the top 12 of the preselection jury

when she should be there.

The organizers did not want to take the risk of being accused of favoritism with the partner TV magazine if Miss Tahiti were to become Miss France.

This young woman had been sanctioned in spite of herself by the committee.

The mysterious photo shoots in Guadeloupe

"The Misses on the cover are only informed the day before the shoot that they have a photo shoot scheduled for the next day

", testifies the journalist Sarah Lecoeuvre after her report in Guadeloupe.

They don't know the session is for

TV Magazine

.

Their chaperones do not want to create any rivalry between them or let appear a clue that could suggest any advantage.

Many other photo sessions are organized with the candidates to immortalize their trip but also to exclusively illustrate other invited media such as

Paris Match

or

Gala

.

“And doubt is allowed.

For those who do not appear on any magazine cover, group photo shoots are organized in addition.

Photos that will be used by TF1 if ever other titles claim them.

“On the spot, the girls question themselves a lot and often try to guess for which magazine they were photographed

, continues Sarah Lecoeuvre.

TV Magazine

represents the Holy Grail for most of them.

Their parents or grandparents have been reading this magazine for years.

Since Miss

France 2010, four candidates have traditionally been on the cover of the

Figaro

TV supplement and the regional daily press.

As two years ago, two quartets have exceptionally been set up this year for two different covers.

“The two sessions were organized in different places and at different times in Guadeloupe.

First in front of the crayfish waterfall where tourists were there by chance.

The production asked them not to take any photos to preserve the exclusivity of the magazine.

Then two days later, after hours of bus and boat, on the island of Saintes for an atmosphere of beach and sea.
