Many people dream of winning millions in the lottery.

But whoever hits the jackpot often needs help – from lottery advisors like Verena Ober.

Munich – If you come to Verena Ober's office, your dream of making quick money has come true.

The 48-year-old advises lottery millionaires from all over Bavaria.

In an interview with our newspaper for our Advent series “Faith, Love, Hope”, she talks about what drives lottery players, what she advises winners and whether fulfilled hope makes us happy.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Verena Ober: I am an absolutely positive thinker with a view to the future.

That also comes with my job.

I deal with many beautiful moments, I can congratulate lottery winners and share their joy.

The life stories of the winners are impressive and enriching.

To be able to experience that is a privilege.

Which experience impressed you the most?

Ober: A million-dollar winner came to us and said that he should have fired his staff in three days.

Now he had the profit and was able to save his business and the employees didn't even know that they were going to be fired.

Stories like this give me goosebumps.

These are moments that are unique.

Do you remember the first winner you advised?

Ober: My first winner won 100,000 euros - not a million prize, but for him it was a huge sum.

He was standing in our customer service and was shaking all over.

Dressed relatively simply, he has probably never seen so much money in his life.

I stood behind him with my arms outstretched, thinking he was going to fall over with excitement.

I hope he turned out happy, but we don't know because we're no longer in touch with the winners.

Lottery consultant Ober about million winners: "Many are initially overwhelmed"

Did you make a conscious decision to turn hope into a career?

Ober: No

(laughs)

.

I'm actually a trained lawyer.

A few years ago, I took over the management of corporate communications at Lotto.

Profit consulting is a very nice part of it.

Do you hope differently today than in the past?

Ober: There is always a chance of winning - even if the chance of winning the main prize is only 1 in 140 million.

This awareness has become more intense through my work.

Once there was a father with his son who said he didn't believe he could win the lottery.

I then said to him, but he is now sitting here with his son, who has become a millionaire.

Then he said, "Yes, that's right, but I could never have dreamed of that."

Do fulfilled dreams always make you happy?

Ober: A win as a money blessing naturally makes many things in life easier.

But that doesn't necessarily have to make you happy.

Why do lottery winners need advice?

Ober: A big win is a life-changing circumstance.

We once had a 25-year-old who won €90m.

Such amounts change a life.

At the beginning there are many questions from the winners.

Many are initially overwhelmed with the new situation.

Many do not know how to deal with the sudden wealth.

Our offer is voluntary, but most people accept it.

At Lotto, however, we do not provide financial or legal advice, but give general tips.

A 40-year-old woman from Ingolstadt could hardly believe her luck.

In the TV competition for the Bavarian lottery ticket, the Upper Bavarian won a whopping 450,000 euros.

Lottery prize consultant Ober: After a million-dollar coup, “silence is golden”

What's your top advice?

Ober: Silence is golden.

Winners should be very careful about who they tell about it.

You should also be careful with your own underage children.

It can be distressing for children to know something they are not allowed to share.

Once the information has been given, it cannot be taken back.

You should think carefully beforehand who you tell about the win.

If I quit my job overnight, it triggers questions.

So far, if I've driven a car that just passed the TÜV and now put a huge sled in front of the door, then that triggers questions.

I have to have an explanation for that and be well prepared for it.

You shouldn't rush anything and rather sleep on it one night longer.

Hope, thrill, routine: what drives lottery players?

Ober: For many it is certainly a ritual that is part of everyday life.

But for many it is also the attraction to dream, to think about what you would do with the profit.

You hand in the ticket and then the dream begins.

This reverie triggers a certain thrill.

Is hope especially great during Advent?

Are more people playing the lottery?

Ober: With Lotto, it depends more on the jackpot.

If it's high, more people play.

Do you play the lottery yourself?

Ober: I play Eurojackpot and since I've been working here I've also played the lottery from time to time.

I'm happy about the little things and I'm happy when I get my stake back.

In a special draw, a man (49) from Middle Franconia won the lottery – with only three correct numbers.
