The popular pharmacist Dieter Sauer says goodbye after 36 years as a pharmacist in Dorfen.

However, the Marien Apotheke will be continued by a successor.

Dorfen

– Dieter Sauer will retire at the end of the year.

He has been running the Marien Apotheke in the city center for over 36 years.

"I always wanted to be a pharmacist," says the Dorfen native, looking back.

What he particularly likes about pharmacy: "Several times a week we produce medicines - stir ointments, fill capsules, prepare recipes.

That's the beauty of this job."

The name Sauer stands for a dynasty in Isenstadt that stretches well into the last century.

"My grandfather opened the Marien Apotheke in 1936, but my great-grandfather was also a pharmacist here," says Sauer.

Is that why he studied pharmacy in Erlangen?

“It was a family tradition, but I am enthusiastic about all natural sciences.

It doesn't matter whether it's biology or medicine - in pharmacy, there's something from both subjects."

Sauer actually wanted to do a doctorate after his studies, but when his grandfather died in 1985 he took over the pharmacy at Marienplatz.

Nine years later he met his wife Andrea.

The native of Munich, who had trained as a wholesale and retail clerk, retrained to become a pharmaceutical technical assistant (PTA).

And so the villagers could get expert advice from the couple on all health-related issues.

"We were all a great team together," says Sauer, praising all long-standing employees in his pharmacy.

His successor, Stephan Seibert, was more or less related to one of his pharmacy assistants, says Sauer.

"We didn't have to place an ad," he says happily.

He's not going to give up his job completely yet: "During the holidays I'll fill in or step in if I'm needed."

The 66-year-old would like to travel a lot with his wife in the future.

The first goal will be a long-distance trip to Namibia.

Then it goes to the USA.

And later on they want to tour Europe in their camper van.

“Everyone is talking about work-life balance these days.

You don’t have that as a self-employed pharmacist,” explains the father of three adult children, referring to the night and weekend shifts.

Sauer has always loved animals, but in addition to dogs and cats, he was particularly enthusiastic about insects: "I kept ants." Watching the small creepy-crawlies is the best way for him to relax, he says.

"It's fascinating how the ants look for their food or how they take care of their queen," he says, full of curiosity.

Sauer has also been enthusiastic about chess since his youth, he played for decades on the Post SV Dorfen team and was also on the board of the club.

As chairman of the Förderkreis Dorfen, he introduced the DoGGs, and as club leader he was also responsible for several advertising shows on the Unterer Markt before he passed his position on to Stefan Tremmel.

And he has also been involved with Dorfener Notgroschen for years.

But his big hobby is geocaching, reveals the pharmacist.

Hiding places are published on the Internet using geographic coordinates and can then be searched for using a GPS receiver.

"It doesn't matter whether I'm with friends in Franconia or on holiday in Rhodes or just here in the area - the electronic treasure hunt is fun and keeps you young."
