At least eight people have died in Peru due to clashes in the strong protests unleashed after the impeachment and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo -after he tried to dissolve Congress-, and three more lost their lives in traffic accidents "in the context of the conflict," the Ombudsman's Office told CNN en Español on Thursday.

The violence has also left 187 civilians and 216 police officers injured, according to the institution's most recent report.

The Peruvian Ombudsman's Office affirmed on Wednesday that the families of the deceased "should receive supportive attention from the Peruvian State."

"Added to this sad outcome, we have identified dozens of injured citizens, in the framework of the protests, and thousands of people affected by the interruption of roads and public and private services."

The institution also made a call to investigate the causes of the events.

"Responsibility must be determined, as well as the corresponding sanction for the / the authors / s," he wrote.

Who died in the protests in Peru?

Of the total of eight deaths in the clashes, six are adolescents, according to the Ombudsman's Office.

Five of the deaths were registered in Andahuaylas (Apurímac), one in Chincheros (Apurímac), one in Cerro Colorado (Arequipa) and one in Chao (Virú, La Libertad).

To them are added the three deaths in road accidents that occurred in the framework of the protests that have included the blockade of 122 points on national roads.

The institution reported that after the death of the 15-year-old adolescent, psychological care will be provided to the 17 classmates in his class at the school he attended in Tapaya.

He also made a special call for the protection of minors during the protests.

"The tragic cases of deceased adolescents generate our strong rejection and concern; in view of these facts, this institution calls for the immediate cessation of violence and the excessive use of force against people, especially girls, boys and adolescents who participate in the mobilizations. social," he wrote in a statement.

The Peruvian Police, meanwhile, reported on December 11 that one person had died during an "attack" on the Huancabamba airport facilities in Andahuaylas, in which a police officer was also injured.

Faced with the current crisis, Defense Minister Alberto Otárola announced on Wednesday that the Government declared a state of emergency throughout the country.

Otárola told journalists that the national measure implies the "suspension of the rights of assembly, of inviolability of homes, freedom of transit, freedom of assembly, freedom and personal security."
