Jörg Kachelmann gets off at the "Riverboat".

Before he says goodbye to the MDR show, he sharply criticizes his TV colleagues.

The moderator does not think much of Thomas Gottschalk in particular.

Leipzig – Jörg Kachelmann (64) proudly presented himself four times as moderator on the “Riverboat”.

After a ten-year break, he has been in front of the camera again on the popular MDR talk show since 2019 – and invited many well-known guests to talk to Kim Fisher (53).

But unfortunately all good things have to end at some point and the likeable TV veteran said goodbye to his TV family on December 23 – this time for good.

"Uncomfortable": Jörg Kachelmann is critical of Thomas Gottschalk and Jan Hofer

From his early days as a meteorologist at ARD to his return to the "Riverboat" - the weather expert has had a varied career in front of and away from the camera.

He could certainly have stayed on for a few more years, but for Jörg Kachelmann the TV exit came at exactly the right time: "I felt last year that I didn't want to be 65 on the telly," says the

abendzeitung-muenchen .de

on his farewell interview with

Superillu

Jörg Kachelmann will be 65 next July - not a bad reason to draw a line under the exciting television career and devote himself to quieter projects.

Jörg Kachelmann is very critical of the fact that some of his older TV colleagues such as Jan Hofer (72) and Thomas Gottschalk (72) are far from thinking about retirement.

"I find the Hofers and Gottschalks of this world uncomfortable, whose ego depends on being able to look into a camera," he told

.

How do you actually become a moderator?

Working as a moderator for the major television stations and following in the footsteps of TV greats such as Thomas Gottschalk and Jörg Kachelmann should be a real dream job for many.

However, getting there is not as easy as one might wish.

Of course, there is the possibility of jumping straight into the moderation chair as a career changer without special training - for example through a successful casting.

In most cases, however, the journey is a lot less straightforward and only leads from an initial internship, an apprenticeship and work as an editor to being in front of the camera after several stages.

"Professional ideas through": Jörg Kachelmann says goodbye to television

Jan Hofer is the moderator for "RTL Direkt" in the studio and Thomas Gottschalk is both the face of "Wetten, dass...?" and regularly with Barbara Schöneberger (48) and Günther Jauch (66) on "Because they don't know what happens!” to see.

After more than 25 years in the television studio, Jörg Kachelmann has had enough of bright lights and loud audiences.

“Go on the telly, go through with your professional ideas,” he explains to

Superillu

and reveals what other ventures he has planned for the future, far from the television studio: “Maybe another book, a podcast.

Let's see."

You have to know when it's over - Jörg Kachelmann also seems to be very aware of that.

Nevertheless, his last "Riverboat" episode on December 23 is likely to be a tearful farewell – and for many viewers the end of an era.

Meanwhile, his moderator colleagues have to suffer a bitter defeat, because the RTL annual review “People, Pictures, Emotions” with Thomas Gottschalk and Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg delivers disappointing ratings.
