The Catalan president insists on the referendum as the next point to be addressed at the dialogue table

The day after the ERC and Junts per Catalunya clashed bitterly in Congress over the reform of the Penal Code and the effects that the changes will have on embezzlement on leaders like Carles Puigdemont, the head of the Catalan government, Pere Aragonès, wanted to calm the aguas in an interview on Cadena SER and has insisted that with the modifications agreed with the Government "no one worsens their procedural situation", in reference to the pro-independence supporters who have fled abroad or who will face a review of their sentences. The national coordinator of the Republicans has also congratulated himself on the progress of the open negotiated path between the Executives but has warned that it will be time to talk about the Gordian knot of the political conflict and has recalled his proposal for an agreed referendum that the Government has ruled out flat out.

The Government discards the new ERC petition: "There will be no self-determination referendum"

"This reform of the Penal Code will allow, and that is why we have supported it, is that no one worsens their procedural situation, no one of the people linked to the referendum," Aragonès assured.

The Catalan president has put on the bandage before the wound with regard to how the judiciary receives the new regulations.

"What we are not going to be responsible for is the interpretation that the Judiciary can make," he clarified, expressing his confidence that the defenses of the list of almost 40 former pro-independence officers who will be affected by the changes in embezzlement and the repeal of sedition "they will use the arguments at their disposal to better defend their position."

Aragonès wanted to recall that none of the organizers of the 1-O referendum took a euro in their pocket and that the budgeted items were never executed and that even some payment was rejected.

“The Supreme Court and other instances of the judicial leadership have used the idea of embezzlement not to persecute those who take public money and put it in their pocket or that of their party, but to discuss whether, for example, access to the The census of Catalans abroad is embezzlement or not because it could be used for a referendum," he denounces.

Asked if the support for the General Budgets has received these legal changes as a counterpart, the head of the Government has denied the major and has limited himself to ensuring that they have been debates that have overlapped over time.

Aragonès has affirmed that after "limiting the repressive capacity of the State" against those who defend secession, it is time for the dialogue table to fully enter the folder on how to solve the political conflict.

The president of the Generalitat has said that his proposal for the agreed referendum has been mentioned in that forum but has not been addressed or studied "for the moment" nor has his idea of an amnesty.

"In a negotiation, no one ever gets everything they want, but now we must address the underlying issue, that the political relationship between Catalonia and Spain", he has deepened.

Last Monday, ERC published the draft of its political presentation for Congress on January 23 and in it it makes a first draft of the so-called clarity agreement, the conditions that the referendum to which they aspire should have.

Aragonès, once again, has invited the Executive to bring his proposal to the dialogue table in order to compare the models.

“Here different positions.

I defend the independence of Catalonia achieved through a referendum agreed by the State and recognized by the international community;

There are those who defend the status quo, not touch anything and there are those who defend or can defend a reform of the Statute.

Well, let's talk about all those options ”, he asked.

Reminded of the impossibility of the current Constitution including the holding of such a vote, the

president

has assured that the real problem lies in the lack of political will to settle the conflict and not so much in the Magna Carta.

“There are two ways to act: one is to directly propose the proposals in the General Parliament or in the Parliament of Catalonia without prior agreements.

The other is to try to reach agreements and based on the agreements, build the legal path”, he warned.
