At the annual financial statements of the Freising city council, one thing was clear: difficult times are behind them - and also ahead of them.

Freising

– The candles on the Christmas tree were lit, the long tables were festively set: On Thursday, the large hall of the Freising town hall was transformed from the otherwise rather sober meeting room into a Christmassy and cross-party banquet.

The reason: The traditional year-end celebration of the city of Freising for city councils and administration could finally take place again this year after the Corona break.

Anton Frankl has been a member of the city council for 20 years.

Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher thanked for this.

He presented a certificate of thanks and a gift.

"Here, where important decisions are made, where solutions are discussed and sometimes struggled for, we can't just celebrate, we even have to," emphasized Lord Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher.

In addition to thanking the council and employees, he even looked back to 2020 this year due to the pandemic and at the same time dared to make a prognosis: "We will overcome the upcoming challenges together."

"Voice of the Voters"

The praise for his city councilors was great: "Representatives of the different political directions stand up for the present and future of their city, they represent the line of their party and groups and give the voters a voice." But according to the mayor, this is always possible : an open exchange without party-political walls to bring the concerns and needs of the people of Freising to the fore.

The start for the "new city councilors" in June 2020 was challenging - among other things due to the need for a supplementary budget.

But one thing is certain for Eschenbacher: "We have consistently and responsibly continued to set the course in the right direction in the education sector."

Tobias Eschenbacher has been working for the city of Freising for a total of 20 years.

Mayor Eva Bönig presented the certificate and gift.

He is also happy that, despite the adversities of the pandemic, holiday programs for the children and an exceptional cultural program such as the "summer miracle" for the adults could be set up.

According to Eschenbacher, 2022 was characterized by ups and downs after the focus on a climate adaptation concept and bicycle-friendly community last year.

On the one hand, numerous happy celebrations under relatively normal conditions, such as the birthday of the music school or the highly successful BR bike tour.

On the other hand, however, also challenging budget meetings.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

"Unquestionably difficult"

The current budgetary situation is "undoubtedly difficult" for Eschenbacher, but "lasting values have been created" with the money invested.

His summary of the past few years: "We have grown together under difficult circumstances to form a body that is characterized by great commitment and creative drive."

Mayor Eva Bönig was also very relieved that it was possible to celebrate together again in a large group: “We experienced very directly at the political base how much personal exchange was missing – with the citizens, but also with each other.” What do you think what people need now is reliability and the certainty that they can build on their town hall and administration.

One thing Bönig would wish for even more in the future, namely that the city council should appear in public "more consistently and much more reliably" in order to be accessible at all times for "the people who make up this city".

Her credo: "Our work must be understandable and comprehensible for the citizens".

This also applies to the representation of democratic majority decisions, without however denying personal opinions.

"It's not for nothing that there is a beautiful sentence above the window," explained Bönig, referring to the lettering in the town hall hall, which should be brought more into focus for her: "Unity in necessary things, in doubtful freedom, in all toleration."

Praise for the OB

She also gave great praise to Eschenbacher: “Dear Tobias, your calm and collegial manner takes the edge off even agitated meetings.

You don't let differences get personal – it prevents lasting hurt.”

Afterwards, Anton Frankl and Charlotte Reitsam were honored for 20 years of membership in the city council, for ten years Josef Schrädler and for 20 years local spokeswoman in Tüntenhausen Elvira Wiesheu.

Eschenbacher himself did not go away empty-handed either, as he has been mayor for ten years, but before that he was also a city councilor for ten years – in other words, he shaped the Freising city council for a total of 20 years.
