The metro train is suddenly plunged into darkness and stops in the middle of the tunnel.
It is 8:28 a.m. on December 19, 1978. The sun has barely risen when three quarters of France are hit by a giant power failure.
Neither the passengers nor the driver of the train realize it at the moment.
“Technical problems, five-minute break
,” announces the chef de train.
Then, ten minutes later:
“Interruption of service due to power outage.
We are evacuating the cars.”
The Parisians go out in the most complete darkness, in single file along the tracks, to regain the surface where an icy temperature reigns.
