Ten people, including five children and boys between the ages of 3 and 15, died today (Friday) in a large fire in an apartment near Lyon in France.
Four people are in critical condition, and ten were injured with varying degrees of injury, including two firefighters.
170 firefighters fought to extinguish the fire.
The Minister of the Interior, Gerard Darmanin, said that the cause of the fire is not yet known, and praised the work of the firefighters, who rescued those trapped "under extremely difficult conditions".
Darmanin stated that he had spoken with French President Emmanuel Macron, and that the police would open an investigation into the circumstances of the fire.
A local resident told the local newspaper "La Progra de Lyon" that he "woke up from the screams".
"We wanted to help people, but the smoke was too thick," he said.
"I saw a dead woman. It's dramatic."
Another neighbor stated that his son was absent from school because of the shock.
"The screams of terror traumatized him. My legs are shaking."
