At first glance, the fire station in Münster is still a construction site.

At second glance, this impression is confirmed.

But the informed eye sees that things have progressed.

Egmating/Münster - As a botched construction, the half-finished building in the Egmating district caused a nationwide media hello - because nothing at all fit.

The hillside building, which also houses the local funeral parlor on the first floor, is too high.

It protrudes too far into the cemetery.

A wrongly placed door, plastic windows that bothered the preservation of historical monuments, a missing internal staircase: improvements had to be made everywhere.

Cost: around 300,000 euros.

In the meantime, even the demolition was in the room.

The house should finally be finished in July 2023

The completion of this renovation work and the opening were actually planned for last summer.

Now it should work at the beginning of July 2023, says Egmating's mayor Inge Heiler (ABE).

"We are now well on schedule." The fact that no client had it easy last year was also the reason why the Münster fire brigade has not yet been able to move into its new building.

Heiler praises the fact that the firefighters themselves have tackled a lot: "They put so much passion and work into it that we can all be really happy when it's finished."

The plastic windows criticized by monument protection have been replaced by wooden ones.

The entrance door has been moved from its original location to the right of the roller shutter to the north side of the building - otherwise the firefighters' path would have dangerously crossed the exiting vehicle, according to the criticism.

Oak wood also dominates the door look in the cemetery.

There is now an internal staircase to the sanitary facilities, which are on the first floor.

Accessibility only with permanent provisional

When it comes to the accessibility of the funeral home, the Egmating residents will have to put up with a temporary solution: because the building is around 70 centimeters higher than the cemetery and there is not enough space for a fixed wheelchair ramp, a mobile ramp will be purchased, says the mayor .

Thanks to the cooperation of the owners, a particularly precarious consequence of the construction botch could be solved amicably: A grave right next to the building has to be relocated: Because of the unfavorable rotation of the funeral parlor into the cemetery, there would otherwise not be enough space for the west gate of the cemetery .

The funeral procession traditionally goes through this at funerals.

In addition, the congregation had to make good weather at the church, since the building protruded into foreign ground.

That succeeded.

Mayor: Legal processing starts now

The people of Münster have therefore come to an agreement with the church as a neighbor and have redesigned the floor plan of the house so that it fits.

But that's not the end of the matter.

"The legal work-up is now beginning," says Mayor Heiler.

"We have an obligation to minimize the damage to the taxpayer."

This means that Egmating will first approach the architect of the building, who has been fired long ago, with a civil claim.

Heiler answered evasively as to whether the mayor Ernst Eberherr (CSU), who ruled during the planning and has since been voted out, should expect a claim for recourse: “That depends on the defense strategy of the architect.”
