Legislative Council member Lau Kwok-fun of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong said today (16th) that many citizens have been allocated public housing far away from their original areas of residence.
He suggested that the government ask public housing applicants about their preferences, and then use big data and artificial intelligence to accurately match public housing.
Advocate to re-launch the tenant exchange program with low success rate and one more choice
Lau Kwok-hsun said on a radio program that applicants for public housing can get three opportunities for housing allocation. According to government statistics, only 47% of people accept the first opportunity for housing allocation, and about one-quarter of applicants do not accept until the third opportunity, slowing down the circulation of public housing.
He believes that if the government accurately allocates public housing, so that most applicants are willing to accept the first opportunity of housing allocation, the process of allocation of housing will be accelerated, and he hopes that the authorities can handle it in a humane manner.
He mentioned that some people are exchanging public housing through social media, but they are not recognized by the government. He suggested that the government re-launch the housing exchange program to allow residents to exchange flats.
He said that the government terminated the project in 2006 on the grounds of low success rate, but the relevant project does not involve much resources, so even if the success rate is low, it can continue to help citizens in need.
