Around 300 tourists are stranded in Machu Picchu due to protests that have been taking place for days in Peru, Machu Picchu mayor Darwin Baca told CNN.

Among the stranded are Peruvians, other South Americans, Americans and Europeans, Baca added.

“We have asked the government to help us and arrange helicopter flights to evacuate tourists,” Baca said, adding that the only way to get in and out of the city is by train, and these services are suspended until further notice.

“Peru Rail (train operator) said that they are still evaluating the situation,” Baca explained.

The mayor also warned that the town already suffers from food shortages due to the protests, and that its economy depends 100% on tourism.

  • What are the claims of the Peruvians who demand the reinstatement of Pedro Castillo as president?

Baca appealed to the government of President Dina Boularte to establish a dialogue with the local population with the aim of ending social discontent as soon as possible

“We ask the Government to please sit down with the population, because we who are in the provinces are not seeing that.

We do not see the government sit down with the leaders of the protests and local communities and listen to their demands.

On the contrary, they are making the army go out and suppress those protests,” he explained.

After assuming the presidency, the new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, fights to contain the strong protests that broke out after the removal of former president Pedro Castillo.

She is the sixth ruler the country has had in less than five years.

Boluarte announced that the government will create a crisis management committee, as protests demanding political change continue across the country.

The committee will be headed by Pedro Angulo, president of the Council of Ministers of Peru, and will include other representatives such as the heads of the ministries of Defense, Transport, Interior and Communications, among others, the Presidency announced on Twitter.
