At least nine people were killed in Peru as a result of the suppression of protests against the removal of President Pedro Castillo in the province of Ayacucho yesterday, bringing the number of victims since the beginning of the protests to 18 people.

Telesur channel quoted the Provincial Directorate of Health in Ayacucho province as saying that at least seven people were killed and 52 injured as a result of the police and army suppressing a demonstration near the provincial airport, while two others were killed in the La Libertad region.

The Ayacucho provincial government held the new president, appointed by parliament, Dina Polarte, and the ministers of interior and defense responsible for the killing of the demonstrators, and called on them to resign immediately.

The demonstrators are calling for the release of President Castillo, the dissolution of Parliament, the formation of a Constituent Assembly, the resignation of Polwarti and the holding of early elections.

In turn, the National Commission for Human Rights called for an investigation of those responsible for the deaths in Ayacucho, an end to the military intervention and an immediate cessation of the use of firearms and tear gas canisters fired from aircraft, holding the political authorities responsible for these crimes.

For his part, President Castillo indicated in a message posted on his Twitter account that the authorities deployed the army in the streets to suppress the protests after the visit of the US ambassador to the government palace, stressing that the United States is behind the repression and seeks to benefit from mining projects in the country.

The crisis erupted on the seventh of December, when the parliament dissolved by President Castillo dismissed him and appointed his deputy Polwarti as president of the country, while the new authority arrested the deposed president and decided to keep him in pretrial detention for 18 months and imposed a state of emergency in all parts of the country.
