The European Parliament
is going through difficult times.
Suspicions of large-scale corruption reach the institution, implicating even one of its vice-presidents.
More than a million euros in cash were seized this week, probably coming from Qatar.
And, as one might expect, this enormous scandal comforts all those who have never accepted the moral lessons which the European institutions in general and this Assembly in particular administer daily.
Remember that the Union is threatening to deprive Hungary of 13 billion euros of community funds… for insufficient compliance with anti-corruption standards!
Clearly,
the European Parliament cannot be held collectively responsible for this affair: there are probably no more dishonest people in it than in any large human organisation.
But we could rationally anticipate that such a scandal would end up breaking out there: the lack of controls, conflicts of interest...
