Unofficially correct: The name Raucher is historically correct, but incorrect according to official maps.

In the middle of the 20th century, an “s” crept in.

Residents of the smokers' part of the community have a hard time: their address isn't on the sat nav.

An error has crept into official maps.

Not an isolated case, suspects the mayor.

Warngau

– In the casual pronunciation, the difference can hardly be heard: Is the farm at the southernmost end of the Warngau municipality now called Raucher or Rauscher?

The latter version is entered on maps and in navigation devices, while the name Raucher does not lead to any result in the navigation system or on Google Maps - although Raucher is even on the place name sign without an "s".

As a result, even a vehicle from the rescue service arrived late when there was a fire in the yard a few years ago, explained Warngau Mayor Klaus Thurnhuber (FWG) at the most recent municipal council meeting.

The committee now wants to clarify: The official name of the community part is to be renamed from Rauscher to Raucher.

The place-name signs can therefore remain – but the name will be changed accordingly on the maps and navigation systems.

No one in the committee had any doubts that this step was necessary.

Thurnhuber emphasized: "It's about safety and alarming." The bureaucratic list of the necessary steps, which Carola Schmidt then listed, caused a little smile in the ranks of the spectators.

Changing the name requires a lot of paperwork

Nobody knew how the error had crept in.

In any case, according to Thurnhuber, Raucher without an "s" is the correct historical name and is entered as such in all maps before 1950.

Sometime later - "perhaps by shouting" - the wrong "s" must have slipped in.

Soon to be officially wrong: The erroneous "s" is to be eliminated again - but the road is long.

Schmidt subsequently explained that the community was asked to submit the name change to the district office at Department 24 with the name "Security, Municipal and Civil Protection", additional title "Municipal and Administrative Offenses" so that the maps could be changed.

After consultation with the clerk, the change should be made in accordance with the announcement of municipal names, national emblems and area changes.

In concrete terms, this means that the municipality must submit an application, justify it and enclose historical sources.

In addition, the residents of the affected part of the municipality must be consulted.

In order for this to be possible, however, the municipal council must first pass a corresponding resolution.

According to Schmidt, the legal supervisory authority of the Bavarian Main State Archives and the Office for Digitization and Networking will be involved as the process progresses.

Only after the end of the procedure will the decision on the name change be announced in the Bavarian State Gazette.

Not an isolated case: Citizens with the wrong address should report

The municipal council now unanimously decided to initiate this procedure and commissioned the administration to conduct the hearing of the residents and to submit the application for a name change.

When asked, the mayor was unable to predict how quickly the “s” would disappear in the navigation system, on Google Maps or on maps.

Raucher is probably not the only district that has been swallowed up by the wrong letters on the map.

"Citizens whose address is wrong should get in touch," Thurnhuber demanded.

Then you can do the process for everyone at once.
