The World Health Organization has expressed its hope that next year will witness the declaration of an end to the global health emergencies for people infected with Coronavirus and monkeypox.
“I expect that the Corona virus and monkeypox will not remain global health emergencies in 2023,” the Director-General of the Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was quoted by Agence France-Presse as saying during a press conference, noting that one of the main lessons learned from the Corona pandemic is that countries must respond. quickly when a sudden outbreak of any infectious disease.
Ghebreyesus explained that the number of weekly deaths from corona infection is now about a fifth of what it was a year ago, stressing that this virus will not disappear and that all countries will have to learn how to deal with it along with other respiratory diseases.
With regard to monkeypox, Ghebreyesus indicated that this epidemic surprised the world, and that more than 82,000 cases of monkeypox have been recorded to date in 110 countries, but the death rate from this disease remained low, as the death toll did not exceed 65 deaths worldwide.
