The renovation of the roof of the monastery church on the Reutberg has been completed.

Now it's time for the interior renovation.

Sachsenkam – The next phase of the renovation of the Reutberg monastery church has been completed for the time being: the interior renovation of the tower and the renovation of the roof structure above the church.

The result was explained on Tuesday by architect Hermann Thurner and project manager Hans-Jürgen Dennermarck during an on-site visit with Axel Hofstadt from the German Foundation for Monument Protection.

This subsidized the carpentry work with 90,000 euros.

Three applicants are currently living in the monastery

Quite apart from the architectural value of the monastery church, the news that the Franciscan nuns were staying in the monastery in the foundation "still supported the sympathy for the measure," explained Hofstadt, local curator for Munich and Upper Bavaria.

"It was important to us that the monastery should continue to be lively." In addition to Sister Benedicta, who has been in charge of the monastery since 2018 as the Apostolic Commissioner appointed by Rome, Sister Faustina, who entered the monastery in 1994, and three applicants are currently living there .

One of them celebrated temporary profession last week, as Sister Benedicta reported.

There is also a novice and a postulant.

This means the three women are at different stages on the way to becoming a full member of the Order with all the rights and duties.

The roof truss was still in good condition after 300 years

The renovation of the monastery church began in 2021. A large scaffolding on the tower announced this from afar.

After the exterior repairs were completed at the end of last year, this year the interior of the tower and the church roof truss were renovated.

The latter dates from around 1730, explained architect Thurner on the spot.

It is a "mature construction, based on an old technology that has been known since around 1600 - except that 130 years later we already had empirical values and mistakes made earlier were not repeated".

Because of the "very clean technical and craftsmanship execution", the roof truss was still in very good condition after more than 300 years, says Thurner.

Nevertheless, over the centuries, moisture has penetrated the beams and caused damage.

Spruce wood from the monastery forest was felled in the rough nights

"During the renovation, we preserved as much historical substance as possible," reported Thurner.

In general, there were small repairs on all components.

For this, spruce wood from the monastery forest was used, which, like in the old days, was felled during the rough nights between Christmas Eve and Epiphany.

The wood from such winter felling has the lowest wood moisture content, added project manager Dennemarck.

The wood was then taken to a sawmill near Dietramszell and dried there naturally, says Thurner.

Its owner was also awarded the contract for the carpentry work, which began around April/May.

In general, they rely on regional companies for the renovation.

In the course of this year's construction phase, the exterior painting of the south facade of the church and the adjacent components were also renewed.

Interior renovation will cost around 1.7 million euros

In the current financing plan for the renovation of the church, which is estimated at around 2.9 million euros, the external repair of the church tower came out a little cheaper than planned.

The architect said there was a “point landing” with the roof truss.

With the interior renovation, which is scheduled to begin in 2023, the largest chunk, estimated at around 1.7 million euros, is still pending.

Dennemarck also referred to the current uncertainties in construction prices.

From a financial point of view, “we started the project a little boldly,” Sister Benedicta said.

In the meantime there have been many commitments from subsidy donors, first and foremost from the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, from special federal programs for monument protection and from the Bavarian State Foundation, but also from the district, the municipality of Sachsenkam,

Further donations and grant applications needed for renovation

According to Sister Benedicta, an amount of 200,000 euros is still uncovered, but according to Dennemarck's estimate, this could increase to half a million euros.

For this reason, further funding applications are in progress and donations are still being requested.

According to Dennemarck, the church will be closed one week after Easter 2023 for the interior renovation.

Heating, electrical, carpentry and master builder work are on the agenda until November.

"During this time, a small summer church will be set up in the Salettl so that services can continue to be celebrated." The sisters, who normally pray seven times a day on the sisters' gallery, move to a chapel in the monastery for this purpose.

In 2024, church painting and restoration work will follow in the baroque hall church, into which the Loreto chapel from 1606 is also integrated.
