State barbarism in Iran

2022-12-17T11:19:48.056Z

The brutal repression of the Ayatollah regime against feminist mobilizations persists in the face of international passivity

The Iranian repressive machinery advances systematically but unsuccessfully in its attempt to dismantle the protests that have taken place daily since the murder in a Tehran police station on September 16 of the young Mahsa Amini, who had been detained by the Moral Police accused of of not wearing the Islamic headscarf correctly.

The brutal action of the police and paramilitary bodies of the regime has been officially recognized in a figure close to a war scenario: 300 deaths.

But the figures adduced by various NGOs rise to at least 450 and an undetermined number of wounded.

To all this is added a massive succession of death sentences.

Until now, the regime of the ayatollahs has resorted to executions on two occasions as a way of punishing those who protest against the theocracy established in Iran after the 1979 revolution under the slogan "Woman, life, freedom". Shekari and Majid Reza Rahnavard, both 23 years old, hanged on charges of "war crimes", understood as blocking streets or threatening security forces.

Organizations defending human rights warn that, in the short term, another 15 people may suffer the same fate.

And in the medium term the number can multiply exponentially because there are between 14,000 (according to the United Nations) and 18,000 (according to NGOs) detainees.

Meanwhile, the sentences against those that the regime of the ayatollahs called "rioters" are multiplying but,

using his own terminology, he treats them as “war criminals”.

In Tehran alone, at least 400 people have already been sentenced to between two and ten years in prison, according to the prosecutor in the Iranian capital.

It should be remembered that there are still two Spanish citizens in custody: Ana Baneira and Santiago Sánchez Cogedor.

Some conclusions can be drawn.

Despite the violent actions of the regime, the protests have not ceased for three months, but, at the same time, the Iranian government has no limits when it comes to facing the biggest popular challenge since the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

The successive rounds of sanctions imposed by the EU do not seem to make a dent in a hierarchy confident in the fear and fatigue of those who have taken to the streets and that has seen its international influence catapulted thanks to the sales of drones to Russia, drones that they are proving crucial in the destruction of Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

Iran's blackmailing by holding European citizens with long sentences in anticipation of future prisoner swaps is also not an encouraging sign.

Every day that passes there are more victims and reprisals in Iran.
